Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals are really starting to gain some momentum and are taking advantage of their lengthy first home stand of the season. Their latest victory was a come from behind effort Monday night to open a three game set with the Victoria Seals. Edmonton scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a 3 - 2 win. The Capitals improved their record to 11-10 and have won eight out of their last eleven games. Caps' starter Lou Pote (2-1) pitched eight strong innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked two Seals. Chad Blackwell pitched a scoreless ninth and picked up his fourth save of the season. Seals pitcher Jino Gonzalez (0-4) was the hard luck loser, pitching into the eighth inning and allowed three runs on six hits.
The Capitals took the early lead in the second inning when Eric McNamee singled home Matt Rogelstad who had doubled with two outs. The RBI single gave the Caps a 1-0 lead, which was quickly erased by the Seals in the top of the third on a two run home run by Matt Kavanaugh. Then the pitchers took over tossing a combined five scoreless innings until the bottom of the eighth. Steve Brown, who was pinch hitting for Lou Pote, singled and scored on an error by Seals third basemen Brian Rios to tie the score at two. Larry Bigbie followed with an RBI single that scored Alex Chavez to give the Caps a 3-2 advantage.
"We're really happy with the way we've been able to come back home and play some ball after the way we started the season." said Bigbie. "Brent (Bowers) was probably worried with the way things were going at the beginning but I could tell we had a pretty good team. Anytime you come out of a short spring training it's always tough to gel as a team but I think we're starting to get that and it's translating well on the field."
Chris Little (1-1, 5.49 ERA) will take the mound Tuesday night for the Capitals against the Seals in the second game of the three game series. It's a Family Vision Care $2 Tuesday with a weather forecast calling for a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 17 degrees, it'll be decent weather for all you can drink slushies for just $2. The Capitals and Seals will play eleven more times this season including the next five games with the Capitals visiting Victoria for a weekend series beginning on June 18th.
