Victoria Seals News Release
Wailuku, HI - In search of their eighth road win of the season, the Victoria Seals returned to Iron Maehara Stadium for game five against Na Koa Ikaika Maui on Saturday night. Looking to Anthony Pluta (2-0) for the start, the Seals faced off against Hawaii native Kaimi Mead (2-3) on the hill for Maui.
With both pitchers strong out of the gate, only allowing six combined base runners through the first four innings, Maui was first to strike in the bottom of the fifth frame. A two-out walk put Tim Battle to first base where he promptly advanced to third on an error to Seals first basemen Matt Edgecombe before scoring on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Na Koa Ikaika lead.
Stretching their advantage in the sixth inning, Maui used another two-out rally to burn the Seals. A walk to put Keoni Ruth on base preceded an RBI double from Phil Avlas that doubled the home side's lead, making it a 2-0 ball game.
A new pitcher in P.J. Bevis on the mound for Victoria made no difference for Maui as the first batter the Australian native faced, Mark Okano, delivered with a two-run home run to hand Na Koa Ikaika a big 4-0 advantage through six innings of work.
Despite loading the bases in the seventh and putting a pair of runners on in the ninth, the Seals couldn't muster a second consecutive comeback against the Maui bullpen. Falling by a 4-0 final score, the loss marked the third time the Seals have been shutout this season.
Kaimi Mead picked up his third win of the season with six excellent inning of work for Na Koa Ikaika, while Anthony Pluta took the loss to fall to 2-1. Mark Okano's home run along with a pair of hits from Phil Avlas was all the offense that Maui needed, while Wilver Perez had three hits and another stolen base in a losing effort for the Seals.
