Chico Outlaws News Release
(Yuma, AZ. July 10th, 2010) On a hot night in Yuma where the game time temperature was 109 degrees F, the Yuma Scorpions used a hot start to down the Chico Outlaws 6-4 in a game the Scorps desperately needed to stay alive in the GBL South first-half title chase.
Chico starter Mark McLemore (3-3) ran into trouble right off the bat in the second inning, when Yuma plated four runs to take a lead they would never relinquish. Four Scorpions got hits in the frame, with an RBI double by Peeter Ramos the big knock. Walter Correa and Jonel Pacheco also had RBI singles, giving Yuma a 4-0 lead.
Yuma put up a solo run in the third inning on a Johny Celis solo shot, his fifth of the year, making it 5-0.
The Scorpions put up their final run of the game on a Pacheco bomb to left, giving Yuma a 6-0 cushion.
Wayne Franklin came out of the Outlaws bullpen to start the sixth inning and went three scoreless innings, striking out three and facing just one batter above the minimum.
The Outlaws finally got to the Scorpions after starter Daryl Arreola (7-1) left the game after six innings of scoreless pitching. Yuma reliever Ronny Malave, pitching to the Outlaws for a second consecutive day, gave up a lead off walk to center fielder Mitch Einertson to lead off the seventh. Veteran big leaguer Bobby Hill then knocked a Malave fastball out of the yard for a two-run shot and the deficit was cut to 6-2.
First baseman Carlos Lopez hit his first homer as an Outlaw to lead off the eighth against Yuma's Zach Cline, who had pitched 5.1 innings in Friday night's game as the starter, making it a 6-3 game.
An unearned run scored for Chico in the ninth after Einertson reached first on a throwing error by Yuma third baseman Santo DeLeon and then came home on an RBI groundout by Mikael Jova two batters later.
Jordan Muir pitched a scoreless ninth for the Scorpions to earn his second save.
The loss dropped the Outlaws to 33-11 on the year, while Yuma moved to 28-17 on the year and hanging on for dear life in the GBL South first half title race. The Scorps need Victoria to take the final two games of the series in Maui against the Na Koa Ikaika. The Strong Warriors can win the first half on percentage points with two wins over the Seals on thier home turf.
The rubber match of the series and final game of the first half for the Outlaws is Sunday night at Desert Sun Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:00 pm. David Dinelli, a right-handed reliever, makes a spot start for manager Garry Templeton, his first of the year.
