INDIANAPOLIS, IND.--The Indianapolis Indians announced the signing of veteran third baseman Scott Sheldon to a free agent contract for the 2004 season.

Sheldon, born in Hammond, Ind., joins the Indians from two years of professional baseball in Japan with the Orix BlueWave. In 2002, Sheldon added 26 home runs and 59 RBI, appearing in 129 games. Last season, in limited action, Sheldon hit .253 with eight home runs and 24 RBI.

The 35-year-old Sheldon, who throws right and bats right, played parts of five major league seasons with the Oakland Athletics and the Texas Rangers. In 141 games (1997-2001), the 6-3, 215-pounder recorded eight home runs and 33 RBI. He posted his best numbers in 2000 where he hit .282 for the Rangers in 58 games. As a Ranger during the 2002 season, Sheldon became only the third player in major league history to appear at all nine defensive positions in a Major League game on Sept. 6 at Chicago.

Sheldon was twice named a Pacific Coast League All-Star while at Oklahoma in 1998 and 1999. In 1999, he was a Baseball America Triple-A All-Star selection, hitting .311 with 28 home runs and 97 RBI.

An eighth round draft choice of the Oakland Athletics in 1991, Sheldon played collegiate baseball at the University of Houston.
