Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release

Winston-Salem, NC – The Winston-Salem Polar Twins came out strong, outplaying Jacksonville in the first ten minutes of play, but it was the Barracudas that would capture the win with a 5-3 decision at LJVM Coliseum Annex. Chad Brandimore had a goal and an assist in the loss for the Polar Twins.

Brad Federenko found Colin Kendall on the left doorstep at 15:23 of the first period to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead. Winston-Salem tied it up just over three minutes later on a shorthanded tally by Brandimore. Former T-bird Marcus Willy was credited with the only assist on the goal.

Following Brandimore's goal, the Barracudas tallied four straight by four different players to put them ahead to stay. Tim Schneider started the surge for the Barracudas with only nine seconds remaining in the first period for a 2-1 game. Kory Baker fed Schneider in the slot for a screened shot that beat goaltender Cam McCormick high glove side to put the advantage in favor of Jacksonville.

In the second period, Federenko tallied on of his own at 12:04 of the second to make it 3-1 Jacksonville. Cerrone Natale's first professional goal put Jacksonville up 4-1 at 13:50 of the second. B.J. Stephens, last year's WHA2 scoring leader, rounded out the scoring for Jacksonville, making it 5-1 in the third period.

The Polar Twins did not give up, however. Captain Rhett Dudley began the comeback for Winston-Salemwith a power play tally with just over five minutes remaining in the third period. Chester Gallant put the Polar Twins within two with 23 seconds remaining in the game but it was too little too late as the Barracudas held on for the 5-3 victory, their first in the SPHL.

The Polar Twins look to get into the win column Saturday night when the Asheville Aces fly into the LJVM Coliseum Annex at 7:30 p.m. Kids who show up in costume receive $2 off their ticket. The best child sporting the best costume as judged by the fans will receive $500 in gift certificates from Hanes Mall.
