Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- Vermont continued to struggle at the plate with runners on base on Saturday evening, but the Lake Monsters took advantage of three run-scoring wild pitches and a run-scoring error for a 5-2 victory over the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action at LeLecheur Park.
The Lake Monsters trailed 2-1 when they scored two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Jonathan Martinez led off the eighth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Martinez moved to third on a wild pitch on the first pitch to Bill Rhinehart, then scored on another wild pitch as Rhinehart walked to tie the game.
After an Aaron Seuss walk, Sean Rooney hit a groundball that first baseman Deshaun Brooks threw wild to second base and alllowing Rhinehart to score an unearned run for a 3-2 Vermont lead. The Lake Monsters added two insurance runs in the eighth as Robby Tolan scored on a wild pitch on ball four to Garrett Bass, who later scored in the inning on another wild pitch by reliever Eric Beattie.
Vermont took an early 1-0 lead in the second as Rooney led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Tolan and scored on a groundout by Jean Alvarez. The Spinners tied the game in the fifth on a RBI single from Jorge Jimenez off of reliever Edulin Abreu.
Lowell took a 2-1 lead in the seventh as Carlos Fernandez and Pedro Vasquez had back-to-back out-out singles, moved up a base on a sacrifice and scored on a passed ball by Rooney for an unearned run.
Abreu (4-3) picked up the win as he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits over three innings in relief of Jordan Zimmermann, who tossed four scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and three strikeouts (all in the first inning). Martin Beno picked up his second save of the season as he struckout three of the four batters he faced in the ninth.
Spinner reliever Eammon Portice (0-2) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with three walks, two wild pitches and two strikeouts over three innings. Starter Felix Doubront allowed one run on three hits over five innings for Lowell (30-25).
Vermont (31-25) move a game ahead of Lowell for second-place in the Stedler Division with the win over the Spinners. The two teams will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday evening with Glenn Gibson scheduled to get the start for the Lake Monsters in the 5:05 contest.
NOTES: The Lake Monsters were without the services of outfielders Mark Gildea and Boomer Whiting on Saturday. Gildea suffered a concussion in Thursday's night loss at Lowell and is expected to be out until Vermont next homestand that begins Wednesday. Whiting, who went 4-for-5 in the loss at Lowell Friday, missed Saturday's game with a left elbow injury and his status is thought to be day-to-day ... Vermont again played an errorless game on Saturday, the 29th time in 55 games this season that the Lake Monsters have not committed an error ... Vermont continues to have the fewest errors in the New York-Penn League with just 44 errors this season.
