MONTPELIER, Vt. - A dominant fourth inning sealed the deal for the Mountaineers on Tuesday evening as they took down the visiting Sanford Mainers, 10-3, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action at historic Montpelier Recreation Field.

Vermont scored eight unanswered runs between the fourth and fifth innings to doom Sanford's chances of a win, utilizing timely hits and the first Mountaineer home run of the season to secure the victory.

The Mainers struck first as Reece Armitage hammered one out past the left field fence to put Sanford up, 1-0, in the second. Vermont evened things up immediately after a wild pitch by Luke Dziados sailed past Ryan Turenne's head and allowed Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) to score.

The Mountaineers offense erupted in the fourth, first with a J.R. DiSarcina (Barnstable, Mass. / University of Massachusetts Dartmouth) single to left field that gave way for McDermott to score. The bases quickly filled with DiSarcina, Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Hofstra University), and Aaron Simpson (Orange, Ca. / Ball State University) all advancing on singles before Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) smashed one to center field to clear the bases with a triple, before scoring himself on a Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) sacrifice fly to put Vermont ahead for good, 6-1.

The Mountaineer onslaught resumed in the fifth, with McDermott scoring his third run of the game off another DiSarcina single. Goulard immediately followed with a homer that soared over the right field fence that allowed DiSarcina and himself to come home to put Vermont up 9-1. The Mainers attempted to mount a comeback in the sixth, gaining their second run of the game after Drew DeMartino scored on a Ryan Turenne sacrifice fly. Gauthier swiftly shut down Sanford's hopes, however, adding an insurance run in the seventh to push the Mountaineers lead to 10-2.

The visitors refused to go away with Turenne providing a home run in the eighth, but it was too little too late for the Mainers as the home team cruised to the 10-3 victory.

Tyler Thorington (Woodhaven, Mich. / Western Michigan University) picked up the win for the Mountaineers, only giving up three hits and one run while striking out seven Mainers. Dziados took the loss for Sanford, allowing eight hits and six runs in a little over three innings.

With the victory, Vermont improves to 2-1 on the season, and will play the second game of their back-to-back with a 6:30 p.m. rematch against in-state rival Upper Valley tomorrow evening on Recreation Field. The Mountaineers defeated the Nighthawks last Friday at home, 7-1.
