Cats Look to Remain Perfect
June 11, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release
After a Monday off the Cats were back in action tonight as they played host to the 2nd place Valley Blue Sox at Joe Wolfe field. The Cats came in with a division best 4-0 mark on the season, 3 of those wins coming at home. That mark was also tied for the best start to a season for the Cats in franchise history. The attempt to hit an unprecedented 5-0 mark was entrusted to starting pitcher Tyler Hays, who was entering this start after pitching 5 1/3 shutout innings on opening day, along with striking out 10 batters and going on to be named NECBL pitcher of the week. Hays did not disappoint as he was as advertised pitching 5 solid innings, allowing only 2 hits and 0 runs. The Cats were given some early offense as Scout Knotts sent his first home run of the season, a towering shot, over the left center field fence to give the club a 2-run lead. It was looking promising early on, as that was all the offense the game would see until the 6th inning when Valley would retaliate. Tristen Hudson came into the game for his Cats debut and struggled leaving in the same inning without recording an out. And when it was all said and done the Blue Sox closed the inning with a 3 to 2 lead. Madison Jeffery also made his first appearance striking out 4 and dancing out of that treacherous 6th inning, and going on to pitch 2 more shutout innings to give his club a chance. The one-run deficit carried into the ninth inning where the Blue Sox hung up a huge insurance run on the right arm of Joe Guerette. The Cats would head to the ninth down two and saw what had the makings of a comeback as Scout Knotts lost a ball in the night sky and wound up with a one out double. However, the pitching proved too good as the Blue Sox shut the door and sealed a 4 to 2 victory. This was the first loss of the season for the Cats as they are now tied atop the division at 4 and 1with the Blue Sox. Both sides played a solid game, but it came down to the walks and errors that plagued the 6th inning for the Cats as well as the oddly quiet night from the bats as the Cats offense was held in check after the 2nd inning. The Steeplecats will look to rest up on the off-day Wednesday, then they will hit the road for games against Keene and Sanford, both teams that the Cats have already faced this season. The season is starting to pick up here in the NECBL and the Cats are right in the middle of the early action.
