Vermont Makes It Six in a Row with 17-6 Victory over Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. - The Vermont Mountaineers won their sixth game in a row with a 17-6 victory over the reigning New England Collegiate Baseball League champions, the Danbury Westerners on Thursday night at Roger's Park.

Vermont improved to 14-1 and maintained their 5.5 game lead in the North Division while the Westerner's dropped to 7-7

Both teams went scoreless before Vermont again took a lead in the second. Leadoff man Evan Fox singled, before stealing second and moving to third on a ground out by Tyler Cox. Joan Sosa plated Fox with a single to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 edge. After Sosa was erased on the bath paths, Tom Ruscitti took his spot at first, moved to second on a Keagan Calero walk, and scored on a Ben Williamson single. Calero then scored on a double steal attempt to make it 3-0.

The Westerner's responded with three runs of their own in the home half to even the score. Harrison Feirberg and Nicholas Romano walked. Jake Hyde doubled while Feirberg scored, before him and Romano scored on a ground rule double by Joseph Skared.

The Mountaineer's offense went right back to work in the top of the third and put up six runs.. Connor Hujsak led off being hit by a pitch before Matthew Venuto was walked. Fox loaded the bases on a single, before Cox reached on an error to make it 4-3. Sosa walked with the bases juiced as Venuto scored, before Ruscitti doubled, scoring Fox and Cox to make it 7-3. Sosa scored on a Calero single followed by Ruscitti scoring on a fielder's choice to make it 9-3.

Jackson Harrigan came into the game in the third inning for his second appearance, shutting down the hosts in order, before Brendan McFall had a pair of shutdown innings with Vermont scoring in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-3.

Vermont's relievers strung together five scoreless innings, before the Westerner's added three runs in the bottom of the eighth, all coming with two outs and making it 10-6 in favor of Vermont. James McDowell came in for two batters and struck out the last hitter of the inning with two runners in scoring position.

The Mountaineer's offense wasn't done yet, pushing across seven runs to blow the game wide open, taking a 17-6 advantage.

McFall got the win for Vermont for the fourth time this summer in relief going two innings with three strikeouts and just one walk. Julian Tonghini suffered the loss for Danbury, being charged with nine runs (eight earned) in two and a thirds innings of work.

Vermont's offense was paced by Fox and Sosa, who each had a pair of hits. Hujsak extended his hitting streak to four games with three hits, including a double, while driving in two runs, extending his RBI streak to four games. Williamson had four RBI's, which was a season high. Ruscitti, Sosa, and Calero also knocked in a pair of runners each. Every Vermont hitter also scored at least one run as well.

Vermont wraps up the road trip with a game against the newest member of the NECBL as they take on the Bristol Blues. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Muzzy Field. You can watch all season long on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
