Vermont Falls to Danbury in Game One of NECBL Quarterfinals

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped game one of the 2023 NECBL Quarterfinals against the Danbury Westerners, 8-2, on Monday night from Montpelier Recreation Field.

The Mountaineers, who earned the No. 2 seed in the postseason after winning the North Division, fall to 0-1 in the playoffs. The No. 7 seed Westerners lead the best-of-three series 1-0 and will look to take the series at home in Danbury, Connecticut tomorrow, August 1st at Rogers Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. Vermont will look to even the series to force a game three back in Montpelier on Wednesday, August 2nd. The Westerners jumped out to a quick lead. A leadoff single and a walk was given up by Vermont starter Nolan Sparks. A single by Bobby Zmarzlak up the middle scored the first run of the game With two in scoring position, Sparks got a pair of strikeouts to strand the runners.

Vermont put the tying and go-ahead runners on as George Rosales doubled to right center with one out and then Nate Stocum walked. Rosales stole third to put runners on the corners.Braden Quinn had a similar start to his counterpart as he struckout the final two batters of the inning, keeping a 1-0 edge for the visitors.

Billy Gerlott doubled to start the second and scored on a triple by Aidan Jolly to make it 2-0. Jolly was stranded at third as Sparks got a pop up, strikeout, and a groundout to end the inning. After a quick inning for Quinn on the mound, Danbury added another run in the third for a 3-0 lead on a one-out error.

The Westerners scored for the fourth-straight inning as Jakobi Davis led off the frame with a solo shot to right field. Danbury added four more runs to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Vermont's offense was held to just one hit all game. After three scoreless innings, Danbury added another home run off the bat of Drew Wyers for an 8-0 lead in the eighth.

Vermont would not be shutout as a two-out two-run blast to deep left center by Aaron Whitley made it 8-2 in the eighth. That was all the Mountaineers could get as Danbury held on for the victory.
