
Vermont falls short against North Adams on Tuesday

MONTPELIER, Vt - The Mountaineers did not know the word "quit" in their fifth and final game against the North Adams SteepleCats as they fought hard throughout the game. Ultimately though, they fell short suffering a loss of 10-8 at historic Montpelier Recreation Field.
Coming from a long weekend on the road, Vermont looked to put another game in the win column as they took the field against North Adams. With Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Le Moyne College) starting on the mound, the Mountaineers set the tone for the game with a quick one two three outing in the first. Unfortunately, the offense could not reciprocate, and the game remained scoreless at the end of the first.
The SteepleCats offense came alive in the second inning, but Murphy was able to hold them at just one run. Vermont was left still looking to get on the scoreboard at the end of the second.
The Mountaineers defense looked a bit shaky on the field in the third inning racking up three errors and allowing two runs to score before an out was made. They quickly recovered, but not before North Adams squeezed in one last run, ending their outing with a score of 4-0. Vermont's offense remained scoreless in the third.
Vermont shut down the SteepleCats offense and came back out with bats hot in the fourth inning, still trailing by four runs. Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts Lowell) made his way to first on an error while Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) moved him right along with a nice single to center. Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y./ Hofstra University) drove in the Mountaineers first run of the night. Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y./ Radford University) worked to keep things alive with another single, bringing DiLoreto home. Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va./ Hofstra University) had his first hit of the night, moving the ball to right field, allowing Goulard to score. Just like that the Mountaineers were back in the game with a score of 4-3 at the end of the fourth inning.
Vermont made a comeback in the fifth inning after North Adams increased their lead by two runs. Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa./ Penn State University) scored on single from center fielder Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich./ Western Michigan University), while Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J./ Stony Brook University) eventually finding his way to home plate after a solid single from Goulard. After a solid outing by the offense, the Mountaineers trailed by one run at the end of the fifth with a score of 6-5.
The SteepleCats bats held steady in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits, ending the inning with a score of 10-5. Climo was able to cut the lead to 10-6 with a solo homerun, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. DiLoreto followed suit with a homerun as well, bringing Giordano home, as Vermont trailed by a score of 10-8.
Still trailing by two runs, Mitchell Sorenson (Westlake, Ohio / Lake Erie College) kept the SteepleCats offense at bay in the top of the ninth with a nice shutdown inning. Vermont had the tying run at the plate, but could not capitalize as North Adams held on for the win.
Ben Shields was able took the win after pitching five innings and allowing 10 hits and five runs, while Murphy suffered a loss after six innings out on the mound, allowing eight hits and six runs. The Mountaineers hit the road for their next game on Thursday, July 25th at Upper Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
