Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped the New England Collegiate Baseball League Championship game series opener to the red hot Martha's Vineyard Sharks by a 16-3 margin on Friday night.
The No.1 seed Mountaineers will need to find a way to beat the No. 4 seed Sharks, who have scored in double digits in their past three games, at the Shark Tank tomorrow, Saturday August 6. First pitch between the two teams in game two of the NECBL Championship Series is set to start at 7 p.m and can be watched online on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
The Sharks scored early and never looked back. A single, double and a walk loaded the bases. A dribbler just past the pitcher, followed by a wild pitch gave Vineyard a 2-0 lead, all with no outs. A single to center by Marcus Franco made it 3-0 all with no outs. Starter Nick Beavin finally got a pop up in the infield, before a flyout to right scored the fourth run of the inning.
Beavin ran into trouble again in the second. The Sharks scored on a one-out double that put two runners in scoring position. However, a huge defensive play got the Norwich product out of a jam. A grounder to Mark Trotta at first got the force out, before the runner at third was run down by Cameron Gill for the unconventional double play.
Vermont got a run back in the second. A leadoff double by Trotta started the inning. Matthew Venuto reached on an infield single to short. A single to left by Tyler Wells loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch allowed Trotta to score from third, but Venuto tried to score from second after the ball was thrown away by the catcher. However, he was out on a close play at the plate and a strikeout with a pair of runners in scoring position ended the inning.
Michael Hutchins came in to start the third for Vermont and put up a scoreless frame. However, a two-out three-run home run by Franco to blow open the game and make it 8-1. The Sharks added eight runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Vermont added two runs in the ninth all with two-outs.
Beavin took the loss while Zachary Clesas got the win for the Sharks.
