Montpelier Recreation Field in Montpelier Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers took game three of the semifinal series against the sixth seeded Sanford Mainers and Vermont will now head to the championship series to play for the title.
Tom Ruscitti (Farleigh Dickinson) hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to add insurance to a 4-3 Vermont lead.
The teams traded runs several times in the early innings. Vermont scored first when right fielder Nic Notarangelo (Endicott) drove shortstop Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) home for a 1-0 lead after the first. The Mainers quickly responded in the second inning with a home run by third baseman Devan Bade (Binghamton) but Vermont regained the lead with Cox again singling to get center fielder Tyler Wells (New Haven) home to make it 2-1.
Sanford got a run once again in the third with back-to-back wild pitches scoring left fielder Jayson Kramer (St John's) to tie the game 2-2. In the next inning, the Mainers took their first lead with a single from catcher Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown), but Vermont answered with two more to take the lead. Third baseman Shane Lussier (Wofford) scored on an error and designated hitter Matthew Venuto (Fairfield) smacked a base hit to bring in Notarangelo for a 4-3 score.
Ruscitti's grand slam gave the home team some breathing room, and they were able to close out the win, despite an RBI single by Quinn McDaniel (Maine Orono) in the ninth for the Mainers.
