MONTPELIER, Vt. - The battle for the Governor's Cup was in full affect at Montpelier Recreation Field but the Upper Valley Nighthawks took the season series with a 6-2 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers on Wednesday night in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Mountaineers lit up the scoreboard early with a run in the bottom of the first by Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) who reached on an error. He came around to score on a shallow sacrifice fly to second off the bat of Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts Lowell). However, Upper Valley answered in the top of the second with a solo home run by Brian Moore. The Nighthawks built a 3-1 edge in the third inning. A pair of back-to-back doubles gave them the lead, before a wild pitch scored Gehrig Anglin.

Vermont looked to rally with two outs in the home half of the eighth. Gauthier walked to start the inning, before stealing second. He swiped third, before Upper Valley's catcher sent a ball into left field, allowing him to score, making it 6-2 in favor of the Nighthawks. Vermont loaded the bases to try and tie the game at six, but a called third strike ended the frame.
Left-handed side arm pitcher, Nathaniel Young (Stevens, Pa. / George Mason University) allowed one walk and retired two batters to close the ninth inning. However, Vermont went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
