
Vermont defeats Newport

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Newport Gulls 8-1 in a North-South New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest at Recreation Field on Saturday night. With the win, Vermont improves to 17-10 on the season. The Sanford Mainers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Plymouth Pilgrims, moving Vermont into first place in the Northern Division by one half game.
With the game tied at one, the Mountaineers bats went off for three runs in the sixth inning to give Vermont a 4-1 edge. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) reached on a bunt single with one away. Two batters later, Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) hit a towering two-run shot to left field to put Vermont up 3-1. The homerun was Vigliarolo's first of the season. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) followed with a double and came home to score when Rob Knightes (St. John's) doubled, culminating a string of Mountaineers extra-base hits. This gave Vermont a 4-1 lead.
Vermont added four more runs in the seventh. Nick Solak (Louisville) led off and singled. Solak advanced to second on a stolen base and third on a wild pitch. He came in to score when Evan Harasta (Albany) ripped an RBI single to center to make it 5-1 Vermont. After Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) and Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) walked back-to-back to load the bases, Vigliarolo blasted his second big hit of the game, a bases clearing, three RBI double to blow the game open and give the Mountaineers an 8-1 lead.
The Vermont pitching was very impressive once again. Ty Wiest (Columbia) got the start and went five innings, allowing no runs on two hits and five walks. He struck out one.
Jordan Doyle (St. Petersburg) made his first appearance of the summer for Vermont, dealing three innings of solid relief. Doyle gave up one unearned run on one hit and one walk. He struck out five and picked up the win, moving to 1-0.
Jared Gesell (UNCW) pitched a scoreless ninth to close the door.
Johnathon Tripp (Texas Tech) started for Newport and went six innings. Tripp allowed four runs, all earned, on seven hits and no walks. He struck out six. Tripp took the loss and fell to 0-1 on the season.
The Mountaineers have Sunday and Monday off and will return to action on Tuesday evening when they duel the North Adams SteepleCats at Joe Wolfe Field in Massachusetts.
