Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Anthony Pearson struggled with his control for the third straight start and the Stedler Division-leading Oneonta Tigers took advantage of that wildness.
The Tigers used four singles and three walks to score five runs in the top of the third inning and held on for a 9-4 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Centennial Field.
Oneonta had used back-to-back walks from Vermont starter Anthony Pearson and a one-out RBI single from Kody Kirkland in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigers then scored their five runs, including RBI singles from Tony Giarratano and Danilo Sanchez, in the third for a 6-0 lead.
Vermont cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the inning on a two-out, two-run double from Kory Casto to score Tim Sweeney and Jason Tuttle. Then after Oneonta added a single run in the fifth inning, the Expos got single runs in the sixth and seventh innings on a Brad Ditter RBI single and Josh Whitesell RBI double.
But the Tigers got a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning off reliever Tyler Kirkman to regain their five-run lead at 9-4.
Oneonta starter Virgil Sanchez (1-0) allowed three runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings for his first win of the season, while Pearson (0-6) gave up seven runs on six hits with six walks over four-plus innings to take his sixth loss of the year.
Giarrantano was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, while Eric Rodland scored three runs and Kirkland knocked in two for Oneonta (20-11). Whitesell, Ditter, Tuttle and Sweeney each had two hits for Vermont (6-26).
The Expos outhit Oneonta 11-8 for the game and the 11 hits finally got Vermont's team batting average over the .200 mark (.202) for the first time since June 24th.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series at Centennial Field on Sunday evening beginning at 5:05 p.m with Nick Long (1-4) on the mound for the Expos. It is True Value Night at the ballpark and there will be 2003 Vermont team photos for all fans in attendance.
