Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Vermont Expos scored three runs in both the bottom of the first and second innings, then had to hold on for a 7-6 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Saturday night at Centennial Field. Edgardo Baez plated all three first inning runs for the Expos with his seventh home run of the season for a 3-0 lead. The homer gives Vermont four players with seven or more home runs this season for the first time in the team's 11-year history. The Expos increased the lead to 6-0 with their second straigh three-run inning. After a one-out double from Doug Vroman and two-out RBI single from Brad Ditter, Ofilio Castro blasted a two-run homer down the leftfield line for his third home run of the season. That home run was also the 45th homer of the season for Vermont, tying a team record set in 1999. Tri-City cut the deficit in half with a run in the third and two more in the fifth, including a Ben Zobrist RBI single in the third and a Hunter Pence RBI single in the fifth. The Expos got another run in the seventh on a out-single by Castro, a wild pitch, groundout and wild pitch for a 7-3 lead. But the ValleyCats, who entered the game with a 10-game winning streak, kept battling back. They got an RBI single from Kevin Vital in the eighth inning, then added two runs in the ninth off Expos closer Gus Hlebovy. Pence had a one-out RBI double and Francisco Caraballo a two-RBI single in the ninth to get Tri-City within a run at 7-6, but Hlebovy struckout pinch hitter Drew Sutton with the tying run on third base to end the game. Castro was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI for the Expos, while Ditter scored a pair of runs. Vermont starter Clyde Jenkins (2-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings, while Hlebovy picked up his 15th save of the season despite allowing two runs in the ninth ininng. Tri-City starter Ryan McKeller gave up the six runs on six hits in the first two innings, but then settled down and did not allow another hit to Vermont over his next four innings. Pence was 2-for-4 with a run, double and two RBI, while Luke Barganier was 2-for-5 with two runs for the ValleyCats (44-24). Vermont will wrap up the seven-game homestand on Sunday with a 5:05 p.m. game with the ValleyCats.
