Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
LOS ANGELES â The Los Angeles Dodgers announced today that a pair of Single-A Vero Beach teammates, second baseman Delwyn Young and right-handed relief pitcher Beau Dannemiller, have been selected as the organization's Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for July, according to Kim Ng, Dodger Vice President and Assistant General Manager.
For Young, it is the second time he has received the monthly award, as he was also honored for July 2003 when playing for Single-A South Georgia.
This July, the switch-hitting Young batted .364 (39-for-107) with eight home runs, nine doubles, 22 RBI and 18 runs scored, while compiling a .425 on-base percentage. He got at least one hit in 25 of the 27 games he played. From July 15-27, Young enjoyed an 11-game hitting streak in which he batted .417 (20-for-48), collecting five homers, four doubles and 15 RBI. That came on the heels of a 14-game streak he put together from June 25-July 13.
Overall in 116 games for Vero Beach this season, Young is batting .289 with 22 home runs, two triples, 34 doubles, 77 RBI and 74 runs scored. The 34 doubles set a new club single-season record, breaking the mark of 33 set by Henry Rodriguez in 1989. Young, 22, was the Dodgers' fourth-round selection in the June 2002 First-Year Player Draft.
Dannemiller appeared in eight games out of the bullpen for Vero Beach in July and allowed no earned runs in 20.1 innings, collecting two saves and yielding just six hits and six walks while striking out 23 batters and limiting opponents to a .090 batting average. In a July 22 outing at Tampa, he pitched 5.0 innings, giving up two hits and striking out nine batters.
The 24-year-old Dannemiller was selected by the Dodgers in the December 2003 Major League Rule 5 Draft after spending three seasons in the Colorado Rockies organization. He was Colorado's 16th-round pick in the June 2001 First-Year Player Draft.
Each Dodger minor league manager nominates players from his team for the monthly honors with the minor league coordinators selecting the winners.
Others receiving consideration for July honors were: Triple-A Las Vegas â outfielder Jason Repko (.311, 17 RBI) and right-hander Yhency Brazoban (2-0, one save, 2.19 ERA); Double-A Jacksonville â second baseman Willy Aybar (.303, 10 doubles, 16 RBI), third baseman Brennan King (.300, 13 RBI) and right-hander Franquelis Osoria (3-1, three saves, 3.20 ERA); Single-A Columbus â outfielder Matthew Kemp (.325, seven homers, 19 RBI) and right-hander Marcos Carvajal (1.23 ERA); Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Dodgers â third baseman Jamie Hoffmann (.323, 19 RBI) and right-hander Howar Zuleta (four saves, 2.70 ERA); Rookie-level Ogden â first baseman Cory Dunlap (.361, 25 RBI, .488 on-base percentage) and right-hander Mark Alexander (2-1, five saves).
Previous Dodger Minor League Players of the Month recipients for this season were Columbus left fielder Xavier Paul (April), Las Vegas catcher Koyie Hill (May) and Las Vegas outfielder Chin-Feng Chen (June). Pitcher of the Month accolades have gone to Brazoban (April), Vero Beach left-hander Mike Megrew (May) and Columbus right-hander Julio Pimentel (June).
