Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) â The first place Vero Beach Dodgers inched ever closer to the second half Florida State League's East Division crown Wednesday night, sweeping a double-header from the Brevard County Manatees, taking game one 10-5 before nabbing the nightcap 1-0.
Game one was the completion of last Saturday's suspended game, that was washed out after the top of the first inning with Brevard County on top 2-0. 1B Trey Dyson helped bring the Dodgers back, going 4-for-5 at the plate, coming just a home run shy of the cycle. It was the second time this season that Dyson was one hit short of completing the feat that has never been accomplished in Vero Beach Dodger history.
Brevard County picked up where they left on Saturday, putting two runs on the board in the second before the Dodgers stormed back from the 4-0 deficit with seven runs over the next two frames. 3B Scott Gillitzer's two-run homer keyed a five-run third that gave the Dodgers a lead they would not relinquish. RF Matt Kemp and Gillitzer each drove in three runs, while DH Russell Martin was on base four times with three walks and a single.
Game one's victor was RHP Casey Hoorelbeke (6-4), who went on to toss seven strong innings, permitting five runs on seven hits. The loss fell in the hands of RHP Alex Morales, Brevard County's starting pitcher, who lasted just three innings, surrendering seven runs on nine hits.
The Dodgers gave RHP Alvis Ojeda a spot start in the nightcap and he responded with five solid innings of shutout baseball. He allowed only three hits, walking no one, striking out three, but left a scoreless game before the sixth inning. Ojeda's counterpart RHP Chris Barlow was equal to the task, taking a shutout into the sixth inning before the Dodgers finally plated a run. With the bases full, 2B Delwyn Young and Barlow engaged in a classic duel that saw Young foul of several 3-2 pitches before earning the walk, driving in the go-ahead run.
LHP Eric Stults relieved Ojeda and kept the Manatees at bay in the sixth, handing the ball off to RHP Beau Dannemiller, who earned his sixth save with a scoreless seventh inning. Stults (1-0) was the winner, while Barlow (4-8) took the loss despite allowing just one run over 5.2 innings.
The Dodgers will try to take another step towards the East Division crown when they start a four-game series at Jupiter Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Roger Dean Stadium.
