Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Jupiter, FL) - Gabriel Gutierrez hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 9th to give the Vero Beach Dodgers a 4-3 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. With the win, the Dodgers took the three-game series and have now won five of their last eight games. The Dodgers return to Holman Stadium Wednesday night at 7:00 PM for Jeff Kent Bobblehead Doll Giveaway Night.

Vero took control of the game early, thanks to the clutch bat of Ryan Carter. The Ft. Myers native smacked a two-out double in the first inning to score David Nicholson for the game's first run. Two innings later Carter blasted a two-out triple, plating Nicholson and Ryan Russ to make it 3-0.

Starter Blake Johnson remained in cruise control until the 7th. Over the first six innings, Johnson allowed just three singles and one walked with four strikeouts. But Terry Evans led off the 7th with a solid double. Mike Ferris then reached on an infield hit. Joe Mather followed with a comebacker to the mound. Johnson's throw to second got past Nicholson and went into center. That scored one run. Centerfielder Jamie Hoffman was backing up the play, but his throw back to the infield ended up in the Dodgers dugout and that allowed both baserunners to come home and tie the score.

Johnson retired the next three batters and became only the second Dodger this year to complete seven innings. Albenis Castillo pitched the final two frames. He did not allow a hit and earned his second win in as many appearances.

The winning run for the Dodgers came home in the top of the 9th. Hoffman walked with one out and advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by Jason Mooneyham. Gutierrez then lofted a 2-strike fly ball deep enough to left to bring home Hoffman and hoist the Dodgers to a win.
