Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

The Vero Beach Dodgers gutted out a 4-3 win over the Daytona Cubs Tuesday night in front of 983 fans at Holman Stadium. Tony Abreu's 2-run, 6th-inning single capped a 3-run inning to help the Dodgers come back and win the game. Vero took two out of three in the series and is 5-4 against Daytona this year. Casey Hoorelbeke dealt three scoreless relief innings to earn him his team-leading 5th win of the year. The Dodgers now go on a three-game road trip against the Palm Beach Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

It was a battle of attrition for the two pitching staffs. Only seven runs scored between the two teams, but there were a total of 14 hits 13 walks, 4 errors, 2 hit batters and 2 wild pitches. The Dodgers left 8 men on base, while the Cubs stranded 15 (including nine from the 4th through 7th innings).

Dayton scored twice in the fourth inning to take an early lead. The Dodgers countered with one in the bottom half against Cubs starter Carlos Marmol. Daytona stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and runners at second and third in the sixth against Hoorelbeke before the Dodgers offense broke through.

Justin Ruggiano laced a one-out single to center against reliever Jordan Gerk. Anthony Raglani walked, then Edwin Bellorin stroked a ground-rule double down the right field line to give the Dodgers their tying run. One out later, Abreu delivered his clutch hit on an 0-2 count to put Vero on top for good, 4-2.

Daytona scored an unearned run in the ninth, but Mark Alexander struck out Robinson Chirinos to end the game and earn his seventh save.
