Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Jupiter, FL) - After letting a 5-0 8th Inning lead slip away, the Vero Beach Dodgers lost 6-5 in 10 innings to the Palm Beach Cardinals. The Dodgers hit three home run in the loss, including the first from Pat Borders. Vero heads back to Roger Dean Stadium Monday night for a 7:05 PM game.
The Dodgers built a healthy lead in the first half of the game. Borders' home run was a 2-run shot in the 2nd Inning that started the scoring. In the 4th, Xavier Paul led off with a solo shot to center and Jamie Hoffman knocked one out to left with two outs in the frame.
The 4-0 lead held thanks to starting pitcher Chris Malone and reliever Adam Thomas. Those two combined for seven shutout innings, scattering six hits and four walks. Thomas entered with the bases loaded in the 5th and coaxed an inning-ending popout from cleanup hitter Terry Evans. He has still not allowed an earned run this season.
Vero Beach got some help in the top of the 8th after Ryan Carter led off with a double. He went to third on Paul's ground out, then scored on a wild pitch from reliever Zach Zuercher, giving the Dodgers a 5-0 advantage.
The wheels began to come off in the bottom of the 8th. Ramon Troncoso entered for Thomas and was greeted with two singles followed by two doubles. After recording an out, he walked Matt Pagnozzi to put runners at first and second. Brian Akin relieved Troncoso, but Matt Shepherd met him with a single that brought the Cardinals within 5-4.
Closer Kyle Wilson came in for the 9th and quickly retired the first two batters. Mike Ferris then drew a walk. Joe Mather, who had doubled in two runs in the 8th, connected on a seemingly routine fly to right, but it was misplayed and not even a last ditch diving effort on the ball by Paul was enough to prevent if from falling and Ferris from scoring to tie it.
The 10th did not go much better for Wilson as Shepherd led off with a single. Sean Danielson sacrificed him to second and Juan Lucena singled to right to score the winning run.
Borders and Blake DeWitt each had three hits for the Dodgers. However the loss dropped Vero Beach to 0-9 on the road and thwarted their attempt to win back-to-back games for the first time this year. The three home runs were their first of the year hit away from Holman Stadium.
