Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

DUNEDIN, FL (April 23, 2006) - You know it's a bad day when a position player is your best pitcher. In a game the Fort Myers Miracle would like to soon forget, they were pounded 12-2 by the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at Knology Park.

The Miracle gave up a run in six of the eight innings to the Blue Jays, including the final five. It got so bad that third baseman Jose Leger came into the ballgame with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth and got a soft liner to Trevor Plouffe at short and a pop up to Plouffe to end the inning.

The Miracle pitching, which was second in the Florida State League in ERA entering the game, were touched up from the beginning. Miracle starter Anthony Swarzak, who hasn't had a 1-2-3 inning this season, didn't get one on Sunday. He went 4.2 innings allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking two and striking out five. The bullpen didn't fare any better with Tim Lahey giving up three runs in 1.1 innings, Ryan Callahan giving up a run in his inning of work and Alexander Farfan giving up three runs (two earned) in 0.1 inning.

Every single Blue Jay starter had a hit and eight of nine scored a run. Ron Davenport was 4-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored, while Eric Nielsen was 3-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.

The final 15 Miracle hitters were retired and their last hit was Kory Feiner's single with one out in the fourth. The Miracle actually led 1-0 in the first when they loaded the bases with nobody out, but Erold Andrus grounded into a double play, which scored Alexi Casilla. They had second and third with nobody out in the third, but managed to score just one run on an Andrus ground out, which gave the Miracle their last lead at 2-1. Garrett Guzman had the only multi-hit game for the Miracle going 2-4 with a run scored.

The Miracle take on the Blue Jays in the finale of the two game series on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Kevin Slowey (0-0, 2.08) to the hill against Blue Jay RHP Jesse Litsch (2-1, 4.67). The game can be heard live on Sports Radio 770 ESPN beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
