VB Dodgers beat Pavano, Yankees

August 3, 2005 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Travis Denker's fourth inning home run off rehabbing starter Carl Pavano gave the Vero Beach Dodgers a 3-2 over the Tampa Yankees Wednesday night. It was the third time this year the Dodgers had beaten a major league pitcher in the Florida State League on an injury rehabilitation assignment. Jonathan Figueroa started for the first time since June 24 to earn the win and improve his record to 4-1. Cory Dunlap added two separate two-out RBI hits against Pavano to give Vero an early lead. The series continues Thursday night when the Yankees trot out another big leaguer, Jaret Wright.

Though Pavano lasted six innings, he got off to a rocky start. Three of the first four Dodgers came up with base hits, including a Dunlap double that made it 1-0. Vero could have put more on the board, but leadoff hitter Xavier Paul was thrown out at home plate. He suffered an injury on the collision at home that caused him to leave the game.

Dunlap's second RBI came on a 2-out single in the third. Jimmy Rohan had reached on an infield single and stole second. The Dodgers stole two bases in the game and have swiped seven bases in only eight attempts during the series. Denker hit his home run in the 4th for his first long ball with the Dodgers and 22nd overall this year.

Though the Dodgers did not have another hit after Denker's homer, the three run lead would prove to be enough. The only runs scored off Figueroa came in the fifth, his final inning of work. He hit Grant Plumley to start the inning and Josh Hollingsworth followed with a home run to left, making it a one-run game.

However, Alvis Ojeda turned in three perfect relief innings, striking out five Yankees. Mark Alexander set down all three batters in the 9th for his 20th save. In all, Vero Beach retired the last 13 Yankees to seal the victory. It was the Dodgers 5th straight win, their longest winning streak of the year.
