Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
JUPITER ,FL (August 4, 2005) - The clock struck midnight as the ball fell softly into the glove of Fort Myers Miracle center fielder Ron Perodin and nearly five hours after the original start time the Miracle recorded a 6-5 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Wednesday night/Thursday morning at Roger Dean Stadium.
The two teams waited through an hour and a half rain delay before starting the ball game and then proceeded to play nearly three and a half hours of baseball. The Miracle didn't seem phased scoring four runs early on to jump out to a 4-0 lead. In the second Kyle Phillips walked with one out, went to second on a balk and scored on a two out single by Scott Whitrock.
In the third Trent Oeltjen walked with two outs, stole second and scored on an RBI double from Brock Peterson. They tacked on two more in the fourth. Kyle Geiger and Whitrock started with back-to-back singles. After a ground out moved the runners to second and third, Perodin singled to right-center to drive in two.
Miracle starter Adam Harben carried a no hitter into the sixth, but the defense fell apart behind him. After a lead off walk, Harben gave up his first hit to the number nine batter Andy Rohleder to put runners at first and second. Jose Campusano then bunted for a single and Harben's errant throw allowed Greg Brown to score. Matt Demarco's ground out scored Rohleder to make it 4-2. Juan Figueoroa then hit a liner to second that Luke Hughes had go off his glove for an error that put runners at the corners. Angel Molina hit a grounder back to the mound and Harben got the lead runner at second, but Matt Tolbert's throw to first went in the dugout which allowed Campusano to score and sent Molina to second. After Ryan Bear walked, Harben was relieved by Jannio Gutierrez. He gave up a single to John Lindsay which tied the game at four. Harben went 5.2 innings allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out six.
The Miracle answered right back in the seventh on a couple of gifts from the Hammerheads. Hughes led off with a single to left. Oeltjen laid down a sac bunt and catcher Brown threw the ball into right field that put runners at second and third. Peterson loaded the bases when he reached on a fielding error by the third baseman Lee Mitchell. One out later Geiger singled home two runs.
In the ninth Rohleder led off with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Campusano bounced a ball over the head of Peterson at first which scored Rohleder, but Campusano tried to stretch it into a double and Whitrock gunned him out. Jay Sawatski retired the next two guys on fly outs to end the game. Sawatski pitched one inning allowing one hit to earn his 10th save of the season.
The same two teams meet Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Jay Rainville (2-1, 3.38) to the hill against Hammerheads LHP Jay Aguilar (1-0, 5.40).
