Arkansas Diamonds News Release

Vickiel Vaughn enjoyed his stops in the NFL, especially San Francisco. However, Vaughn is happy to now be a Diamond. The former Razorback is a leader in the secondary for the Diamonds. Vaughn, a Plano West (TX) product, came to Arkansas in 2002. After stops with the 49ers, the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys, he is back in Arkansas playing for the Diamonds of the Indoor Football League.

"I'm back in Arkansas. I love it. Why wouldn't I love it?" he said before the Diamonds played the Austin Turfcats. "I've got great fans."

Vaughn talked about the opportunity to bring a championship to Arkansas. "I feel like each and every game we're getting better. We're going to grow. I feel like we are going to achieve our goals of going undefeated and bring a championship back to Arkansas."

Vaughn is doing his part. On the year, he has two interceptions (one against Austin) and a kick return for a touchdown. However, Vaugh is looking for more touchdowns on the year. "I want eight. We play 14 games; I want eight," he said with a smile.

"I should have had two instead of one," he said explaining that he returned his interception against Corpus Christi to the two yardline before fumbling. "I ran it to about to the two yardline and then I fumbled."

Vaughn made his case for the fans to come out.

"First off, this game is very exciting. This game is very high paced. If you like basketball, you like things that are very high paced, very intense, a high scoring game, this game is what you want to see," he explained. You're going to see a lot of touchdowns. Plus you can take home a souvenir very easily."

In the indoor game, footballs often go in the stands. "The balls that we lose or throw in the stands, you get to take with you," he pointed out. "We don't get keep them, you get to keep them."

He added, "We give you all these things and other aspects, and plus, we just want to say that 'we are the greatest show on turf.'"

With a new roster, fans might be wonder who they should look for on the field. Vaughn had his suggestions.

"First off, our running back Dedrick Poole," he said when asked who to look for. "Our quarterback, Willie (Copeland); we have our wide receiver in Coco [Jamaine] Blaylock and our kicker Brian Umstead."

"Trust me, you want to be a friend of Brian because he is kicking all the balls to you," Vaughn said referring to Umstead's history of kicking the ball over the net behind the uprights. "All his balls go to the fans. He puts it [the football] over the uprights."

Vaughn, Copeland, Blaylock, Poole, Umstead and the rest of the Diamonds will be in action once again at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock on Saturday March 27. The Diamonds will honor the troops with a "Salute the Troops" halftime show. The Diamonds (2-1 )will be playing Abilene Ruff Riders with kickoff at 7:05 p.m.
