Over a Cup of Coffee

Today I'm tackling the Indoor Football League, seeing if their press releases end up generating local news stories. If you are unaware of the criteria I am using for this article, please refer back to either of the first two parts of this series located in the links below.

My conclusions on IFL teams

A couple things I found interesting in looking back over team releases and media coverage in the IFL. First, older, more established teams generally had better press coverage with fewer press releases. Also teams who have played opponents such as Billings who have a very good press following benefitted in this survey with Billings coverage overlapping that team's own. I also noticed that some former af2 teams had plenty of press releases while still a part of the af2 or the new AFL, but those sharply reduced after joining the IFL. On one team in particular, Austin, they were putting out a good number of releases and getting fair press, but it appears both dropped off dramatically about the time they changed GM's. Austin is a tough market, and more than one team has come and gone with poor fan support being the reason. I can't see how a drop in media coverage benefits them in the least. All three of Maryland's media stories are from teams they played, with no local coverage. Also of note, it appears former UIF teams do better with press releases and media coverage than teams who came to the IFL from other leagues, including Intense League teams. There were four teams with no pre season releases, but none of them are new teams.

On a per-team average, IFL teams issue more press releases and have more media coverage overall than both of the other leagues tracked so far. The IFL bills itself as the premier league, and one may dispute that title, but there is no question the majority of their teams follow through well on releases, which in my opinion turn into mainstream media headlines.

Tomorrow I look at the SIFL and then Saturday will try to make sense of all the numbers.

Correction time

Yesterday I mentioned in the CIFL that Marion was at Chicago. My mistake as its Marion (0-0) at Cincinnati (1-0).
