SAUGET, Ill. - After back-to-back sweeps against the Schaumburg Boomers and Joliet Slammers, the Gateway Grizzlies swept the Frontier League Player of the Week awards on Monday.
Grizzlies third baseman Niko Vasquez was named the Frontier League Player of the Week and starting pitcher Kerry Kelley was selected as the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week for week seven.
"It was an outstanding week for our team and especially those two guys," Grizzlies manager Phil Warren said. "Niko had a monster week on the offensive end and Kerry continues to give us quality starts."
Vasquez collected 11 hits in the team's six games last week, including eight over the weekend against his former team in Joliet. Vasquez has hit five home runs in his last four games to give him six on the season. The Las Vegas, Nev. native raised his average from .264 to .292 during his award-winning week.
Kelley went 15 innings in his two starts last week. The left-hander from Palmdale, Calif. collected a no-decision in a 4-3 walk-off Grizzlies win Tuesday against the Boomers. The former Cal State San Bernardino start allowed just one run (unearned) in seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts.
Sunday afternoon at Joliet, Kelley yielded just one run on three hits over eight innings while notching his first professional road win.
Through three professional starts, he has a 2-0 record and a 0.90 ERA.
The 28-13 league-leading Grizzlies have won seven straight games. After an off day on Monday, the Grizzlies will start a five-game homestand at GCS Ballpark on Tuesday. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (5-1) will make the start for the Grizzlies in the series opener against the Florence Freedom. First pitch is set for 7:05 on Tuesday.
