Vasquez and Karalexis named to USL First Division Team of the Week

Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery forward Usiel Vasquez and defender Tim Karalexis have both been named to the USL First Division Team of the Week. Vasquez scored the winning goal and Karalexis had the assist as the Battery scored its first road-win of the season with a gritty 1-0 display versus the Minnesota Thunder on Saturday night. The goal was Vasquez's first as a professional in this his rookie season.

Originally drafted by MLS's Metrostars Vasquez joined the Battery after an impressive college career at Southern Connecticut, where he was named as a Division II First Team All-American and led the offensive attack, achieving a team-best 35 points on 14 goals and 7 assists in 2004.

US Open Cup news

The Charleston Battery has been drawn against the winner of the Des Moines Menace (PDL) versus Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL 2) fixture in the 2nd round of the US Open Cup on Wednesday June 29.

Des Moines and Pittsburgh square off tonight in Des Moines. If the Menace advance then Charleston will travel to Des Moines for the game; if Pittsburgh win, the Battery will host the Riverhounds, June 29 at Blackbaud Stadium.

Military Night

Friday night is the Charleston Battery's annual Military Appreciation Night presented by the US Army as the Battery takes on the USL leading Richmond Kickers (Blackbaud Stadium, 8:00 PM). The Army is bringing a rock-climbing wall, a display of military specialist vehicles and the US Army Jump Team will be parachuting into the stadium with the game ball.
