June 15, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - After a difficult four-game, eight-day road trip, the Portland Timbers (4-3-3, 15pts) return home to PGE Park for matches against the Puerto Rico Islanders on Thursday, June 16, and the Rochester Raging Rhinos on Saturday, June 18.

The revenge-minded Portland club lost to both teams on the road this month, but currently holds a nine-game, regular-season unbeaten streak at PGE Park.

TIMBERS VS. PUERTO RICO - THURSDAY, JUNE 16 - 7 p.m. (Pacific)

A much-improved Islanders side (3-2-3, 12pts) shut out the Timbers for the first time this season, handing Portland a 2-0 defeat on June 6 in Puerto Rico ... Brazilian striker Mauricio Salles tallied both goals in the affair, earning the league's Player of the Week honor as a result ... goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who was the Timbers' second round pick in this year's college draft, posted the shutout on three saves ... the Timbers won 5-0 the last time the two clubs met at PGE Park on Aug. 19, 2004.

TIMBERS VS. ROCHESTER - SATURDAY, JUNE 18 - 7 p.m. (Pacific)

Rochester (4-4-1, 13pts) defeated the Timbers 3-1 on June 3 with a five-point performance (2g, 1a) from Kirk Wilson ... the Raging Rhinos tallied three goals in the first half before the Timbers defense settled down and Portland forward Dan Antoniuk converted a penalty kick to avoid the shutout ... the Timbers are 0-3 vs. Rochester since 2001.

ROSTER MOVES

Timbers defender David Henning, who logged 15 minutes on the pitch this season, has been released from the team ... Henning signed with the Timbers out of training camp in 2004 and spread 772 minutes over 13 matches with Portland through two seasons, tallying one assist last year ... Portland also announced the re-signing of midfielder Garrett Marcum this week ... Marcum, 26, spent last season with the club and has been training with the team since training camp ... the University of Portland product hasn't seen playing time as of yet.

FINDING THE NET

Despite dropping Friday's match at Vancouver 3-2, the Timbers managed to score two goals against a stingy Whitecaps team, equaling the amount Vancouver previously surrendered all season. This comes as good news for the Timbers, who scored only twice in the three matches prior, with both goals coming on penalty kicks.

PUGS AT THE PARK

The 12 best-dressed pugs from this year's Pug Crawl event invade PGE Park at halftime of Thursday's Puerto Rico match. The theme is "Super Pugs," and all canines will be donned appropriately in superhero costumes. The audience will judge the winner, based on crowd applause, and $1 from every ticket sold will benefit the Oregon Humane Society in partnership with Banfield, The Pet Hospital.

OYSF NIGHT IS SATURDAY

The Oregon Youth Soccer Foundation (OYSF) has teamed up with the Timbers for the second-annual OYSF Night, Saturday vs. Rochester. A non-profit organization dedicated to helping soccer players around the state attain their goals on the field and in the classroom, the Oregon Youth Soccer Foundation will honor several scholarship recipients at halftime of the match. Partial proceeds to the event will be donated to the OYSF.

POSTER GIVEAWAY

Saturday's match versus Rochester is Timbers Team Poster Night, with the first 1,000 entrants into the game receiving the complementary souvenirs.

HOT OFF THE PRESS

Thursday marks the debut of the second edition of the Timbers Review, the official magazine of the Portland Timbers. Issue Two features a Q & A with Aaran Lines and Gavin Wilkinson, a preview of the July 23 match against Sunderland AFC of the English Premier League and the latest news surrounding the Portland Timbers Football Club.

LINES CLEARED

Midfielder Aaran Lines, who suffered a strained shoulder vs. Puerto Rico last week, has been cleared to play and is eligible for Thursday's match.
