Toronto Lynx News Release
(TORONTO, ON) - The Toronto Lynx Soccer Club will play their first international friendly since 2002 when they take on the Dungannon Swifts FC of the Irish Premier League on Monday, July 11th at 7:00pm at the Nottawasaga Inn in Alliston, Ontario. This event is receiving an enthusiastic response from the Huronia Soccer District and the Irish Community in the GTA and has been sanctioned by the CSA and the Irish Football Association.
Dungannon Swifts enjoyed a very successful 2005 season, finishing in 4th place in the Irish Premier League, just 2 years after earning promotion from the First Division. Founded in 1949, Dungannon has a storied history, including gaining promotion to the IPL by winning the 2002/03 First Division Championship as well as capturing the Bob Radcliffe Cup 8 times and the Mid-Ulster Cup 3 times. Dungannon Swifts FC is coached by Joe McAree, winner of the Irish League Manager of the Year Award for leading Dungannon to a 15-10-5 record. The forthplace finish gave Dungannon the opportunity to enter the Intertoto Cup in Europe, however, they were forced to decline due to commitments to their Canadian Tour.
Dunganon Swifts Canadian Tour is part of their training program in preparation for the 2005/06 season. The Central Ontario Sports Administration & Marketing under the directorship of Mike Kenny is arranging the tournament and has also arranged for special soccer camps for clubs in the Huronia Soccer District which will be delivered by the Dungannon Swifts coaching staff and players. Full Day camps are available for only $160 and half day camps for $100.
Loyal Lynx fans will have the opportunity for complimentary reserved seating to the match with the purchase of a season ticket and flex pak package this season! For more information, fans may call the Toronto Lynx Ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 ext. 31 or e-mail lynx@lynxsoccer.com.
The Lynx have played four international friendlies in their history and have shown that they have the talent to take on high quality European Clubs. Competitions have included beating Iranian First Division champions; Persepolis 2-0 in 1998; losing 2-1 to Santa Clara of the Portuguese First Division in 1999; dropping a 2-0 decision to Reggina of Italian Serie A in 2000 and earning a 1-0 victory of TSV 1860 Munich of the German Bundesliga in 2002. The Lynx Head Coach, Hubert Busby Jr., promises a delightful competition for soccer fans.
