April 9, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WUERFEL PARK - The Traverse City Beach Bums are excited to announce that veteran infielder, and 2012 Frontier League MVP, Jose Vargas is returning to the club in 2015. One of the most popular players in team history, Vargas will fill the veteran role for the team. He has been a part of two playoff teams and a successful overall run for the club.
"I'm very excited to be coming back this year especially after having the injury last season" said Vargas. "I was talking with Dan (Rohn) and Jason (Wuerfel) and they were saying our team is shaping up to be really good. That they'll have a hard time making their cuts during spring training."
A Frontier League team is allowed to have one player 27 years or older as long as that player has been listed on a league active roster or injured list for a total of at least 100 games the previous two season.
"We're excited to have Jose back. He'll be our veteran this year as he's been a big presence for us" noted Beach Bums' manager Dan Rohn. "Hopefully he'll be able to put up the big numbers he has for us in the past."
Since joining the Beach Bums for the 2011 season, Vargas has played in 323 games and is 47 away from tying the club record. From 2011 until early 2014 he played in all 200 possible games before an injury put him on the sidelines. Despite that injury, he still played in 50 games hitting .266, six homers and 37 RBI.
"Jose has been great for the Beach Bums and is a class act both on the field and off the field" added Beach Bums' President John Wuerfel. "He is a great ambassador for not only the team but all of Traverse City." For his career, he is hitting .270, 64 homers and 261 RBI. He already holds the franchise record in doubles (83) and triples (13). His 349 career hits are second most in team history.
In 2012 he was named the Frontier League MVP after driving in 100 runs and belting 29 homers. Both are single-season franchise records. He also earned an All-Star Game appearance in 2012.
The 27 year old started his career in the Chicago White Sox organization after being drafted in the 22nd round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. In 2008 he played for the rookie-level Bristol (TN) White Sox hitting .232, six homers and 27 RBI. In 2009 he split time with rookie-level Great Falls (MT) and low-A Kannapolis (NC). He finished his time with the White Sox in 2010 playing a full season with Kannapolis, appearing in 98 games.
Vargas is a native of Ventura, CA.
