
Vandeweghe Earns First Grand Slam Win

NEW YORK CITY - August 30, 2011 - Two-year Boston Lobster veteran CoCo Vandeweghe earned her first Grand Slam win at Tuesday's U.S. Open with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Italy's Alberta Brianti.
Vandeweghe advances to face ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur in the second round Wednesday. Stosur is currently ranked No. 10 in the world in what will be the third match of the day at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
In the following match on the same court, Lobsters' marquee player John Isner, seeded 28th, takes on Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus.
The 112th-ranked Vandeweghe finished off the straight-set win in just under two hours. She converted 75 percent of her break points, while Brianti made just one out of her 11 attempts.
After a 66-minute battle for the first set, Vandeweghe held off several break points in the seventh game to go up 5-2 in the second set. Brianti held her next serve but Vandeweghe, who was born in New York but now lives in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., held on to advance in 1 hour, 53 minutes.
The 19-year-old Vandeweghe helped the Lobsters rally for two wins at the end of the regular season that propelled them to their second consecutive World TeamTennis Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
Two-time Lobsters' marquee player James Blake, currently ranked No. 63 in the world, defeated Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands in the fourth match at Louis Armstrong Stadium later Tuesday, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. He will face fifth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain on Thursday.
Also on Wednesday, Irina Falconi will take on 14th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova in the third match on Court 11.
On the final match of Court 6, the eighth-seeded doubles team of Lobster Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Rojer faces Grigor Dimitrov and Dmitry Tursunov.
