NEW YORK CITY - Two-year Boston Lobster veteran CoCo Vandeweghe earned her first Grand Slam win at Tuesday's U.S. Open with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Italy's Alberta Brianti.
Vandeweghe advances to face ninth-seeded Samantha Stosur in the second round. Stosur is currently ranked No. 10 in the world.
The 112th-ranked Vandeweghe finished off the straight-set win in just under two hours. She converted 75 percent of her break points, while Brianti made just one out of her 11 attempts.
After a 66-minute battle for the first set, Vandeweghe held off several break points in the seventh game to go up 5-2 in the second set. Brianti held her next serve but Vandeweghe, who was born in New York but now lives in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., held on to advance in 1 hour, 53 minutes.
The 19-year-old Vandeweghe helped the Lobsters rally for two wins at the end of the regular season that propelled them to their second consecutive World TeamTennis Eastern Conference Finals appearance.
Two-time Lobsters' marquee player James Blake, currently ranked No. 63 in the world, takes on Jesse Huta Galung of the Netherlands in the fourth match at Louis Armstrong Stadium later Tuesday.
