Boston Lobsters News Release
MANCHESTER by-the-SEA - The Washington Kastles extended their hold as Eastern Conference leaders in Mylan World TeamTennis with a decisive 25-14 win over the Boston Lobsters at the Manchester Athletic Club. The Kastles won all five sets over Boston.
In the featured set of the night, Washington's Martina Hingis, former No. 1 in the world and multiple Grand Slam champion of the mid-1990s, defeated Boston's Irina Falconi, 5-3, in women's singles. Then, in the fifth and final match of the night, men's singles powerhouse Sam Querrey of the Kastles defeated Boston's Tim Smyczek, 5-3, to bring Washington's conference-leading record to 6-3 while the Lobsters fell to 4-6.
Earlier in the match, the Kastles came back from a 4-1 deficit in men's doubles when Querrey, 34th in the world in the ATP rankings, hit a monster backhand winner immediately after serving two aces to start the comeback in the pivotal sixth game. The 5-4 victory put the match score at 15-8, Washington.
Washington took a 10-4 lead after two sets when Hingis and Anastasia Rodionova defeated Falconi and Parra Santonja, 5-2, in women's doubles. With Arantxa Parra Santonja serving three-all in the fourth game of the set, Hingis broke serve with a powerful cross-court, two-handed backhand to give the Kastles a 3-1 edge and control of the set.
In the match opener, seven-year Washington Kastles and Mylan WTT veteran Leander Paes teamed with Hingis to defeat the Lobsters' mixed doubles pairing of Scott Lipsky and Parra Santonja, 5-2.
The Lobsters will return to the Manchester Athletic Club on Saturday, July 25 when the California Dream and the popular men's doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan visit New England for a sold-out match before the Lobsters close-out their Mylan WTT home regular season against the Philadelphia Freedoms on Monday, July 27 at 7pm.
