Boston Lobsters News Release

MANCHESTER by-the-SEA - The Boston Lobsters dropped their final home match of the 2015 season with a hard fought 20-17 loss to the Philadelphia Freedoms on Monday night at the Manchester Athletic Club.. The match came down to the final set and the Freedoms pulled away with a decisive 5-2 victory in mixed doubles to clinch the win.

Jan-Michael Gambill, who has switched roles from coach to player since the departure of Alex Kuznetsov and Tim Smyczek, began the evening in men's singles against Robby Ginepri. Ginepri, a proven and successful counterpuncher, came out firing and earned a break in the first game of the match and breezed past Gambill for a 5-2 victory.

In the marquee matchup of the night, 2015 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Coco Vandeweghe of the Freedoms took on Irina Falconi of the Lobsters in the second set of the contest. Falconi jumped out to a 3-1 lead, keeping Vandeweghe guessing by mixing in her repertoire of creative drop shots, lobs, and a strong baseline game. Falconi was able to brush off a couple of break points on her serve later in the set and secured an impressive 5-2 win against the 32nd world ranked Vandeweghe.

Next up, the Lobsters' Scott Lipsky and Gambill teamed up against the Freedoms' Marcelo Melo and Ginepri in men's doubles. Melo, the third ranked doubles player in the world only behind the Bryan brothers, showcased his doubles prowess and helped the Freedoms take back the lead with a convincing 5-3 win.
