Philadelphia Freedoms News Release
The Philadelphia Freedoms dropped their second straight match to the California Dream, while hosting their only marquee match of the season featuring the Bryan Brothers at the Pavilion at Villanova University on Sunday night.
To start off the night, Robby Ginepri faced off with Tennys Sandgren in men's singles. Ginepri put up a good fight throughout the set, sending it into a tie breaker. Despite his best efforts, Ginepri lost the set 5-4 giving California a 5-4 lead to start off the match.
Next, Taylor Townsend took the court for women's singles against Jarka Gajdosova. Townsend started off the set serving and easily swept the first three games. Gajdosova tried to catch up, but with the help of Townsend's strong serves and quick reflexes, she was able to take the set 5-2.
With the Freedoms now in the lead, the match entered men's doubles. Marcelo Melo and Robby Ginepri paired up to take on Bob and Mike Bryan, the number one men's doubles pair in the world. The last time Melo played against the Bryan brothers was earlier this year when he defeated them in the French Open alongside partner Ivan Dodig.
Melo and Ginepri started off strong and fought hard, but the Bryan brothers came out on top, winning the set 5-1.
As the match went into the second half, the Dream remained ahead 12-10 going into women's doubles, where Taylor Townsend and Abi Spears faced off against Jarka Gajdosova and Anabel Medina Garrigues.
The set went back and forth between the Freedoms and the Dream until they entered into a tie breaker. Despite Taylor's powerful overhands, the Dream pulled ahead winning the set 5-4.
In the final set of the match, Taylor Townsend took the court again with partner Marcelo Melo against Bob Bryan and Anabel Medina Garrigues for mixed doubles.
Melo and Townsend didn't give up easily. They gave it their all until the last point of the match, but Bryan and Garrigues took the set 5-2. This brought the final match score to 22-16 giving the California Dream their eighth win of the season.
Next up for the Freedoms is a home match against the Boston Lobsters on Tuesday, July 28 for their last match of the regular season.
