Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - When Canadians LF Matt Newman hit a two-run home run off of Salem-Keizer starter RHP Joan Gregario in the bottom of the 1st inning, few would have thought it would be the decisive blow which it turned out to be as Vancouver topped the Volcanoes 5-1 on Wednesday night to open August with a victory.
Newman's 3rd home run of the summer gave Vancouver an early lead which they built on in the bottom of the 5th scoring a pair of runs off of Gregorio with SS Jorge Flores' double scoring RF Carlos Ramirez to extend the lead to 4-0.
Canadians 1B Art Charles hit his 1st home run of the season in the bottom of the 8th inning to put the game out of reach although the Volcanoes would break up the shutout bid for the C's in the top of the 9th inning when C Dashenko Ricardo grabbed a base hit off of Canadians reliever RHP Tucker Donahue that scored DH Trevor Brown who doubled to lead off the inning.
Vancouver got five solid innings out of starter RHP Javier Avendano who improved to 4-1 on the season lowering his ERA to 1.53 in the process. LHP Colton Turner pitched two scoreless innings in relief giving up a lone hit while striking out three Volcanoes.
