Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Gesa Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - Canadians 3B Kellen Sweeney's two-run home run in the top of the 4th inning was the icing on the proverbial cake as Vancouver topped Tri-City 5-1 to win their seventh straight game and improve to 4-0 on the team's current eight-game road trip.
Tri-City committed a pair of errors in the top of the 2nd inning that helped the Canadians power to a trio of runs off of starter LHP Roberto Padilla who didn't make it out of the inning. After a pair of errors from SS Rosell Herrera and 1B Miguel De Leon, Vancouver's big blow came from RF Carlos Ramirez who's triple scored C Dan Klein (walk) chasing the Tri-City starter from the game.
Up 3-0, the Canadians would add a pair of runs in the top of the 4th inning when 3B Kellen Sweeney hit his 4th home run of the summer over the right field wall off of Dust Devils reliever RHP Matt Flemer that scored SS Jason Leblebijian (single) to extend the lead to five.
Tri-City's only run of the game came in the bottom of the 4th inning when SS Rosell Herrrera would single off of Canadians starter RHP Javier Avendano and advance to second base on a wild pitch before coming around to count on a single from the bat of RF Derek Jones to cut the Vancouver lead to 5-1.
Aside from the lone run, Avendano sparkled en route to his 5th win of the season. The native of Maracaibo, Venezuela struck out ten Dust Devils hitters while scattering four hits over his six innings of work to lower his league leading ERA to 1.53 on the summer.
From there, Canadians relievers RHP Zack Breault (2.0IP) and RHP Bryan Longpre (1.0IP) would limit the Tri-City offense to just one hit as the Canadians improved to 10-4 (.714) on the second half with a convincing 5-1 victory.
