Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants rallied to defeat the Kamloops Blazers 3-2 Saturday night at the Interior Savings Centre in Kamloops. The Giants and Blazers split the season series, each winning 4 games.
After a scoreless opening period, the Blazers got in the board midway through the second period as Brandon Herrod beat Adam Morrison to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.
The Giants took advantage of a power play opportunity in the third period, taking a grand total of 7 seconds to score; Marek Tvrdon beat Cole Cheveldave for his 26th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. The Blazers regained the lead 4:01 later courtesy of JC Lipon, but the lead would not last long. Tvrdon scored his 2nd goal of the night and 27th of the year, banging home a loose puck to tie the game. Vancouver continued to press, David Musil's point shot was stopped but Nathan Burns would not be denied on the rebound giving the Giants their first lead of the night, 3-2. The Blazers thought they had the equalizer with 4.3 second remaining, but it was immediately waved off. After video review, it was agreed the goal was kicked in and did not count. The Giants held on to win 3-2.
For the first time in a long time the Giants won the special teams battle, going 1-for-2 on the power play and killing off all 4 Kamloops power plays, including a 5-on-3 in the first period for 1:39. Adam Morrison made 26 saves for his 34th victory of the season.
Spokane also won on the night, defeating Kootenay 3-2, meaning nothing changes in the race for 4th place in the Western Conference standings. Both the Giants and Chiefs have 81 points, but Spokane has a game in hand so they currently hold down the 4th spot.
The Giants wrap up the weekend tomorrow night back on home ice when they play host to the Victoria Royals. Puck drop is 5:00 pm at the Pacific Coliseum. The pregame show begins at 4:30 pm on AM 650.
