Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY-The Tri-City ValleyCats are now one game away from clinching their first Stedler Division championship after a 12-2 beating of the Jamestown Jammers before 3,053 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The ValleyCats have now won eight in a row and their win, coupled with an Oneonta Tigers loss in Brooklyn, means they are one game away from clinching the post-season berth.

Mario Garza had a big day for the ValleyCats. He went 3-4 with a single, double, a two-run homer and six RBI's.

The ValleyCats found themselves down 2-0 before they even recorded an at-bat. Jamestown got two runs off ValleyCats starter Andrew Alvarado. In the bottom of the first inning, James Cooper walked and Ben Zobrist singled, pushing Garza to second base. Mario Garza stepped up to the plate and lashed an RBI single to bring Cooper home. Brady Koch then delivered a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring home Zobrist. The ValleyCats tied the score at 2-2.

Jamestown starter Allen Baxter was throw out of the game in the third inning arguing a balk call that gave the ValleyCats a 3-2 lead. Jonny Ash started the season with a single and after James Cooper popped out, Ben Zobrist singled and pushed Garza up to third base. Baxter was then called for a balk. Zobrist moved to second and Ash, apparently unaware of what was going on watched, as the umpires were late in signaling the call. Ash went home and was tagged out. The umpires then made it clear that Baxter had balked home Ash. The ValleyCats led by one and Baxter was thrown out of the game.

Jeffrey Lacher came into the game and surrendered a two-run home run to Mario Garza. It was Garza's first home run since August 2. The ValleyCats had a 5-2 lead.

The ValleyCats tacked on another run in the fourth and sixth innings. In he seventh inning, Tri-City got five runs against Jammers pitching. Mario Garza hit a bases-clearing double to finish his RBI total at six on the day. Francisco Caraballo also hit his sixth home run in that inning.

Chad Reineke came into the game to pitch the eighth and ninth innings. Reineke pitched two scoreless innings to ensure the ValleyCats a six game homestand sweep. The ValleyCats now go to a place where their winning streak started a week ago, Burlington Vermont.

The ValleyCats and Vermont Expos start a four game series in three days with a doubleheader tomorrow night. Game time is set for 6:00, and the action can be heard beginning at 5:40 on AM 1160 WABY and AM 900 WUAM Saratoga Springs as well as on the Internet at sportsjuice.com.
