SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Tri-City ValleyCats (2-3) fell 9-1 to the Schaumburg Boomers (5-0) on Tuesday at Wintrust Field.
Tri-City picked up five hits against Brendan Knoll in the first two frames, but was unable to plate a run. Leadoff singles from Jaxon Hallmark in the first and Kyle Novak in the second were quickly erased by double plays in both frames. Elvis Peralta had a two-out knock in the second, but was thrown out at third trying to take an extra base on a single from Ryan Cash.
Schaumburg opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Ryan McCarthy tripled off of Chas Cywin. Brett Milazzo doubled in a run to provide the Boomers with a 1-0 lead.
Hallmark laced a double to begin the third. Dylan Broderick grounded out, and advanced Hallmark to third base. Olund lifted a sac fly to tie the game 1-1, marking the fifth consecutive game he drove in at least one run.
Schaumburg countered in the home half of the third. Tyler Depreta-Johnson and Christian Fedko each singled, setting the table for a three-run shot from Seth Gray to give the Boomers a 4-1 lead.
Depreta-Johnson started the fourth with a triple, and Alec Craig followed up with a single to put Schaumburg ahead, 5-1.
Gray led off the fifth with a walk. McCarthy grounded out back to Cywin, and Gray went to second. Afterward, Kyle Fitzgerald had an RBI single, and moved to second on the throw. Fitzgerald stole third, and Milazzo walked, ending the night for Cywin. Depreta-Johnson collected his third knock of the game, this time with an RBI double against Arlo Marynczak to provide the Boomers with a 7-1 advantage.
Schaumburg padded its lead in the sixth. Chris Dawson advanced to second on an error from Broderick, and Gray doubled in a run. McCarthy then singled, bringing Gray to third, who came home on an error from Marynczak to make it a 9-1 affair.
Knoll (1-0) earned the win. He tossed five frames, allowing one run on seven hits, walking one, and striking out two.
Cywin (0-1) received the loss. He pitched 4.1 innings, yielding seven runs on nine hits, and walked three.
Tri-City concludes the series in Schaumburg tomorrow, Wednesday May 15 th . First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM EDT.
