Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, ND - The roster of the 2016 Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks continues to grow with a pair of players returning for a second season. The signings of C/1B Charlie Valerio and RHP Benji Waite brings the number of players signed for 2016 to 19.
Valerio, 25, batted .268 with 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 26 RBIs and 30 runs scored in 65 games. He missed over a month of action in the middle of the season due to a finger injury. Valerio saw action in 37 games at catcher, 13 games at first base and four games at third base last season. He also saw time at designated hitter. Behind the plate, he threw out 23 percent of would be base stealers.
Valerio began his professional career in 2010 after signing with the Cleveland Indians organization as a free agent out of his native Dominican Republic. He spent five seasons in the Indians chain, and reached the Double-A level in both 2013 and 2014. He is a career .261 hitter with 57 doubles, six triples, 21 home runs, 152 RBIs and 149 runs scored in 311 games.
Waite, 29, was 1-0 with a 4.11 ERA in 23 games for the RedHawks last summer. He was signed as a free agent in June after beginning the year with the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Waite pitched 30.2 innings for Fargo-Moorhead and allowed 15 runs (14 earned) on 27 hits. He walked 13 batters and struck out 21.
Prior to his arrival in the American Association last year, Waite pitched in the Pecos League for the Trinidad (CO) Triggers in 2013 and the United Baseball League for the Rio Grande Valley (TX) White Wings in 2014. In three seasons, Waite is 13-6 with a 3.36 ERA and three saves in 79 games (seven starts).
