GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL LIFTS BLAZE OVER VOODOO, 63-61
Videtich's 23-yard Field Goal Gives Opening Victory
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze K STEVE VIDETICH woke up with a fever but ended the day feeling well as he kicked a game-winning field goal as time expired. The Blaze defeated the New Orleans VooDoo, 63-61, in their home opener in front of 14,222 fans.
"It wasn't the prettiest kick, but we'll take it," Videtich said after the kick skimmed the left upright.
The Blaze were led by Offensive Player of the Game QB JOE GERMAINE who completed 24-of-36 passes for 330 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Ironman of the Game honors went to WR/LB RYAN DENNARD who caught a touchdown pass, rushed for one touchdown and had two pass breakups. OL/DL CHRIS JANEK proved to be a defensive standout with two sacks for a loss of 18 yards as he was named Defensive Player of the Game.
"Joe (Germaine) was magnificent tonight," said Blaze head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE on the quarterback's first start since mid-season last year.
The Blaze scored on the opening possession of the game as Germaine connected with WR SIAHA BURLEY for a 15-yard touchdown to jump out to an early 7-0 lead.
New Orleans tied the score at 7 points apiece as QB ANDY KELLY hit WR DARNELL MC DONALD for a four-yard TD. The pass also made Kelly the first 40,000-yard passer in AFL history. Kelly played for the Blaze last season and helped lead the team to the playoffs in its first season in the AFL.
Neither defense could come up with a stop as both teams scored on every possession until VooDoo K ERIC HOULE missed a critical PAT off the upright allowing Utah to hold a 28-27 edge. WR/LB TOM PACE ended the first half with 47 receiving yards, surpassing 2,500 career yards.
The scoring continued for both teams in the second half with Utah failing to convert on two of their own PATs. With the Blaze on the losing side of the 61-60 score, the turning point in the game came in the fourth quarter. With three seconds left, K STEVE VIDITECH sealed the victory with a 23-yard field goal.

THE COACHES:
Utah - Danny White, 15th season
129-64 (.67) reg. season; 149-75 (.67) overall
0-3 career vs. Arizona
Entering his 15th season as an AFL head coach and second with the Blaze, White has compiled a record of 141-65 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 years (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White won AFL "Coach of the Year" award in 1993 and officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. White guided the Blaze to a 7-9 regular season record during the Blaze's inaugural season. The Blaze also made the postseason before falling to the rival Arizona Rattlers in 2006.

Arizona - Gene Nudo, 2nd season
8-9 (.47) reg. season; 9-10 (.47) overall
3-0 career vs. Utah
Nudo is celebrating his 13th season with the Arizona Rattlers and second as the team's head coach. In his first year as head coach, Nudo led the Rattlers to an 8-8 regular season record and their 13th playoff appearance in franchise history after a one-year absence. Nudo, who joined the Rattlers as an assistant head coach in 1995 after serving as the Arena Football League's Vice President of Football Operations, became the team's Vice President of Administration the following season. Nudo helped the Rattlers earn five consecutive commissioner awards for the AFL's "Best Organization" (1996-2000) while earning an unprecedented three "Executive of the Year" awards (1997, 1999, 2000). During the 2002 season, Nudo was awarded the AFL's prestigious Founder's Award, given to a person that has dedicated his life and career to the growth and improvement of Arena Football. Nudo's franchises have competed in five ArenaBowls, winning one with the Rattlers in 1997. Overall, Nudo has compiled a 120-31-2 record as a head coach, earning a 1992 induction into the Minor League Hall of Fame.

BLAZE FALL 57-34 TO RATTLERS IN WILD-CARD
Arizona Advances to Divisional Round

PHOENIX - The Arizona Rattlers (9-8) outscored the Utah Blaze (7-10) 36-10 in the second half to advance to the Divisional Round with a 57-34 victory in front of 7,982 fans at the US Airways Center.

"I am proud that our team never quit," said Blaze head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE. "This is part of the growing process and we will use this to help us improve for next season."

Arizona QB SHERDRICK BONNER opened the scoring by finding WR/DB RANDY GATEWOOD for a nine-yard pass to give the Rattlers the 7-0 lead. The Blaze would answer when QB ANDY KELLY hit WR/DB ORSHAWANTE BRYANT on a three-yard scoring strike to make it a 7-7 game.

Touchdowns to WR/LB JUSTIN SKAGGS and OS SIAHA BURLEY helped give the Blaze a 24-21 halftime lead.

Utah began the second half with a Kelly-to-Burley connection of 41 yards to give the Blaze the 31-21 lead. The Rattlers ensuing drive finished when Bonner fumbled at the goal line to give the ball to the Blaze, but the Arizona defense sacked Kelly for a safety on the first play to make the score 31-23 halfway through the third quarter.

That was when the momentum shifted to the home team. Bonner then found Gatewood at the 4:20 mark in the third to draw the Rattlers closer at 31-30.

"It was a nine-point swing," White said. "It was too much for us to overcome."

Utah K STEVE VIDETICH added a 22-yard field goal to extend the Blaze lead to 34-30. Rattlers regained the lead when Bonner hit Gatewood again, but GARY KRAL's PAT was blocked by OL/DL JOHN CULP. The Rattlers led 36-34 with 8:14 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Rattlers went on to score the game's final 21 points to seal the victory and send the Blaze home with their third loss in three tries against Arizona this season.

Bonner, who earned Offensive Player of the Game honors, finished the game by completing 16-of-26 passes for 238 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. Gatewood, who was tabbed Ironman of the Game, had seven receptions for 119 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 4.5 total tackles on defense. OL/DL WENDALL GAINES earned ADT Defensive Player recognition for recording 2.0 total tackles and a sack while applying constant pressure on Kelly all night.

Burley led Blaze receivers with six receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Kelly finished the night by completing 22-of-33 passes for 226 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
