USHL Salutes Hawks' Spicer
January 2, 2024 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - Jack Spicer was perfect on Saturday and very good on Sunday, earning two wins for the Waterloo Black Hawks and recognition as the United States Hockey League Goalie of the Week for himself.
The USHL announced the award on Tuesday. It is the second time Spicer has claimed a weekly honor from the league. The previous instance was on January 9th last year during his first season in Waterloo.
The Hawks visited the Dubuque Fighting Saints last Saturday, winning 1-0 in a shootout. It was the first time since November of 2016 that Waterloo has shutout an opponent during a game that went all the way to a shootout. The Hawks have only accomplished the rare feat one additional time (in October of 2004) since the USHL implemented shootouts in 1996. Spicer made 24 saves in regulation, then three more in overtime. Although he had technically already earned a shutout by making those 27 stops, Spicer also denied all three Dubuque shootout attempts to secure the victory.
In a Sunday rematch, Spicer was solid once again. His 37 saves were a career high, and the Black Hawks upended the Fighting Saints 6-2. Spicer faced at least 11 shots in each period, and Dubuque's two second period goals were both recorded in power play situations.
This season, Spicer is now 3-6-0. All three of his wins have come against Dubuque, an accomplishment which no other goaltender has yet celebrated in 2023/24 against the current Eastern Conference leaders. Spicer's weekend performances shaved his 2023/24 goals-against average to 3.30.
In 2022/23, the Rockville, Maryland, native played in 34 regular season contests and earned a 21-11-1 record. From New Year's Eve 2022 to last January 20th, Spicer won seven consecutive decisions. He finished the campaign with 2.99 goals-against mark and .887 save percentage. He was also invited to represent Waterloo during USA Hockey's All-American Game for NHL Draft-eligible players.
This season, Spicer is the third Black Hawk to win a USHL Player of the Week award. Forwards John Mustard and Jakub Altrichter were recognized on November 27th and October 16th respectively. The last Waterloo netminder to be picked as Goaltender of the Week was Emmett Croteau on April 10th of last year.
The Black Hawks visit the Lincoln Stars for games this Friday and Saturday.
