Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A controversial shootout goal cost the Waterloo Black Hawks a second standings point Friday and allowed visiting Team USA to claim a 4-3 overtime shootout victory at Young Arena.

Tied at one in the second round of the shootout, Anthony Louis fired a shot off the post to the left of Jay Williams, which sprang back into the goaltender's equipment as he fell to the ice. Referee Ken Anderson initially indicated no goal on the play, but after a long conversation with the other on- and off-ice officials, the scoreboard was changed to "2-1" while Ryan Papa was skating in for the Hawks' second attempt. There were no further shootout goals as Team USA claimed the tie-breaker 2-1. Scott Savage and Taylor Cammarata had each scored in the first round for Team USA and Waterloo respectively.

The visitors recorded the only goal in the final period of regulation to force the overtime when Hudson Fasching slid a puck between the posts from just outside the crease at 9:17. More action at the front of the Hawks' net led to a fight with 2:17 remaining. The Hawks took exception to J.T. Compher taking an extra whack at Jay Williams after a save; Compher and linemate John Hayden were sent to the showers when Tony Cameranesi and Scott MacDonald were banished to the opposite dressing room. There was more contact in the crease during the final minute as Louis ran Williams and sent him sprawling into the net during a rush. Waterloo could not convert on the resulting power play which carried into overtime.

Neither team was able to generate much during the opening half of the first period, but Waterloo took the lead 13:31 into the game. Hunter Miska made an initial save, but Cameranesi found the loose puck behind the net and stuffed it in to Miska's left with the goaltender looking the opposite direction. The Hawks struck again less than two-and-a-half minutes later. Vince Hinostroza's feed from behind the goal to MacDonald in the slot set up a shot which trickled through Miska's pads.

Team USA cut into the lead during the second period, converting their third consecutive power play to begin the frame when Tyler Motte cut to the front of the net at 5:16. The Hawks got that goal back on their only power play of the period at 12:35 when Trevor Owens fired a rocket to the top corner after a turnover. However a late marker at 15:56 on a wraparound by Compher made the score 3-2 going to intermission.

Miska stopped 19 shots in the win, while Williams turned away 32 chances while suffering the OTL.

The Hawks are on home ice again Saturday against the Omaha Lancers. Good seats for the contest still remain; the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Waterloo Black Hawks keychain. The Black Hawks box office opens at 11:30 Saturday, and tickets for all home games at Young Arena are always available online at waterlooblackhawks.com.
