Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Indianapolis, IN-The Sioux Falls Stampede were outshot 52 to 34 and couldn't get the bounces in a 4-1 setback in Indianapolis against the Indiana Ice on Friday night. The Stampede dropped to 8-8-1 on the season and remain tied for fourth place in the Western Conference with Des Moines. Dan Carlson tallied the only goal of the game for the Herd while Charlie Lindgren stopped 48 shots on the night. The Stampede are now 2-4-1 on the road this season.
For the second night in a row the Stampede came out flying to start the first period, but it would be the opponent striking first. Christian Hilbrich got the Ice on the board at 8:17 with a blast from the left point. Dan Sherer fed Hilbrich up the left wing wall who brought the puck up the left wing boards and then slapped a shot from the left point into the upper right hand corner of the net to give the Ice a 1-0 edge.
Sioux Falls would respond just under two minutes later when Dan Carlson registered his third goal of the season. Austyn Young picked up a bouncing puck behind the net of Jon Gilles and found Ryan Keller open just outside the crease. Keller slid the puck to the left side where Carlson buried his opportunity, slipping the puck under the glove Gilles and into the net to make it a 1-1 game. The game would remain tied at the end of one, despite the Stampede's two powerplay opportunities.
The game remained tied until 13:44 of the second period when Alex Barron's shot from the right circle went through the five-hole of Lindgren to give the Ice a 2-1 lead. The Ice struck again with just 3:01 remaining in the period on a powerplay goal from Ryan Cole to make it a 3-1 game. The Ice entered the game with the league's top powerplay and showed why. Cole benefited from a pass from Alexander Kuquali that bounced off a skate right to Cole who wristed a shot past the stick side of Lindgren to give the Ice a two-goal advantage at the end of two periods. Indiana outshot the Herd 20 to 11 in the period.
The Stampede put plenty of pressure on in the third period, but hit two goal posts and couldn't get the puck into the back of the net. Austyn Young and Justin Selman both made nice plays in front of the Indiana net, but were stopped by a crossbar and goal post. Ice goaltender Jon Gilles made some nice stops as well and held off the Herd. The Ice offensively broke through in the third, registering 17 shots in the period and put the game away for good when Daniil Tarasov found Sean Kuraly open in front of the net and Kuraly slipped the puck past Lindgren to make it a 4-1 game.
The Stampede struggles on the powerplay continued as they were 0 for 3. The Ice went 1 for 3. The Stampede are now 1-4-1 in their last six games in Indianapolis. Sioux Falls has scored just five goals over their last four games. The Herd look to rebound next Friday when they return home to face the Lincoln Stars at 7:05 PM.
