JUPITER, Fla. - Jose Urena pitched six shutout innings of one-hit ball in the Hammerheads' 5-0 win over the Bradenton Marauders Monday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
What started as a pitcher's duel turned into a comfortable win for the Hammerheads, who've now won two of three.
Sent to Bradenton on a major league rehab assignment, LHP Francisco Liriano started and pitched three perfect innings for the Marauders, striking out six. RHP Jose Contreras (also on a rehab stint) pitched the fourth and fifth innings, making one costly mistake-a two-run double off the bat of Jupiter's Wilfredo Gimenez.
The Hammerheads added another run in the sixth off of RHP Zack Von Rosenberg, a Ryan Fisher sacrifice fly to score Joe Mahoney. Isaac Galloway and Ryan Rieger each drove in a run in the seventh, giving RHP Collin Cargill-who pitched two scoreless innings-and RHP Kevin Cravey-who tossed a scoreless ninth-a five run cushion.
The Marauders managed just three hits off of Hammerheads' pitching. Two were infield hits, the third a double to the gap in left field with two outs in the ninth.
Monday night's game marked the second straight impressive outing from Urena, who tossed six innings of one-run ball against the Miracle in Ft. Myers last Tuesday. In his two starts thus far, Urena has allowed just one run on four hits and one walk in 12 innings.
Urena's six shutout innings Monday night boosted an already impressive pitching line for the Hammerheads' starting pitchers this season. In 48.2 innings (11 starts), their starters have allowed just 12 earned runs on 40 hits and eight walks, good enough for a combined 2.22 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP.
The start of Monday night's game was delayed 42 minutes due to rain.
The Hammerheads will look for a second consecutive win Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. when they throw their Opening Day starter LHP Justin Nicolino, making his Roger Dean Stadium debut.
The Marauders will counter with RHP Robby Rowland. For more information on the Jupiter Hammerheads, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Miami Marlins, please call (561) 775-1818 or visit JupiterHammerheads.com. For tickets and more information about Roger Dean Stadium, visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
