June 16, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
A combined three hitter between two Upper Valley pitchers led the Nighthawks past the Mountaineers in the first game of the Governor's Cup, 3-1.
Upper Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, courtesy of some timely hitting and small ball. Anthony Quirion (Dixville, QC/ Lamar) led off the inning with a double to left center. After a walk to Anthony Meduri (Columbus, NJ/ Binghamton), Eddie Modica (Massapequa, NY/ Long Island) hit a jam shot into shallow right field, scoring Quirion. The Nighthawks added another run after Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd) made a throwing error, allowing Meduri to cross.
Reid VanScoter (Conesus, NY/ Binghamton) started the game for Upper Valley, pitching five good innings. His only blemish was a solo homerun from Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) in his first at bat for Vermont. He took a fastball deep over the right field fence in the bottom of the second, cutting the Nighthawks lead in half.
Upper Valley added another run in the top of the sixth to make it 3-1. Jordan DiValerio (Berwick, PA/ St. Joseph's) came in in relief of VanScoter, and would only allow two base runners the rest of the game. He pitched the last four innings, and picked up his first save of the year. VanScoter got the win, throwing five innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out four.
DaValerio went the final four, giving up no hits, while walking one and striking out three. Ross Mintzer (Wynndmoor, PA/ Lock Haven) took the loss for Vermont, despite earning a quality start. He went seven innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out three, falling to 0-2 on the season.
The Mountaineers (2-7) are back in after Sunday, as they head down to North Adams to face the SteelpleCats (3-6) on a Father's Day match up. First pitch is set to start at 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
