WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - In a tight game pitchers duel that included just seven total hits, the Upper Valley Nighthawks topped the Vermont Mountaineers 3-0 on Friday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Upper Valley has now won five straight games, and takes a 2-0 lead in the season series against the Mountaineers.

An RBI groundout in the second inning by Nighthawks catcher James McConnon (Springfield, Pa./St. Joseph's) scored Al Molina (Freehold, N.J./Seton Hall), which was all the scoring Upper Valley Nighthawks needed to pick up the win.

Molina led off the second inning with a double and advanced to third on a fielder's choice grounder, before scoring on the one-out grounder.

The second and third Nighthawks' runs came in the eighth inning after McConnon and first baseman Cade Sorrells (Monroe, Ga./Lipscomb) scored on a sacrifice fly balls by Blake Deatherage (Burlington, N.C./UNCW) and Anthony Godino (Thornwood, N.Y./Wagner), respectively.

Vermont's Thomas Muratore (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Lesley) made his second start of the year. He had an excellent outing, pitching seven full innings, with only three hits allowed, and one earned run. Muratore struck out four and walked just two, while taking the loss.

Upper Valley started Joe DeRosa (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Iona), who pitched well, going six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while striking out three and walking one.

The Mountaineers were able to manage just four hits during the game.

Upper Valley brought in relief pitchers Sean Frontzak (Naperville, Ill./St. Louis U), William Carnley (Silverhill, Ala./Troy), and Cory Gill (Cottonwood, Ala./Troy), who combined to allow one hit and three punch outs in three innings of work. Gill picked up his NECBL-leading fourth save of the season.

The Vermont Mountaineers (4-4) return back home to Montpelier on Saturday to take on the Sanford Mainers at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through the NECBL Broadcast Network.
